As a product photographer in Raleigh, I keep this page as a running record of the work coming out of my studio, including projects like 3D body scanning technology shoots. Every brand and every product brings a different challenge, and this is the place to see that range in one spot, updated as new shoots wrap. If you’d like to see the full scope of what I offer beyond product work, take a look at my commercial photography services and if your product deserves images that do the work justice, let’s talk. As a product photographer in Raleigh, I work with businesses across Raleigh, Cary, Durham, and Chapel Hill to create photography that’s sharp, accurate, and built to hold attention. Get in touch here to start your shoot.
Size Stream: 3D Body Scanning Technology
Some of the best days on the job as a product photographer in Raleigh happen when a client hands you something you’ve never shot before. That was the case working with Size Stream, a company turning full body scanning into an art form.
Size Stream builds machines that capture thousands of data points off a single subject and turn them into a full 3D avatar, accurate enough to pull hundreds of precise body measurements from one scan. It’s some of the most exacting 3D body scanning technology in the world, and it made for a genuinely fascinating shoot for a Raleigh product photographer to take on.
What hooked me most was the story the images could tell. The before-and-after transformation shots carried real weight on their own, and my job as the product photographer was to make sure the camera did that story justice, from sourcing the right models to the final round of retouching. That’s the part of product photography I love most: turning something technical into something people actually feel when they look at it.
Size Stream itself is a serious player in this space. The company designs and builds its scanning systems right here in the Triangle, out of Cary, NC, as part of The Apparel Group, based in Dallas. Their engineers and software developers bring over a century of combined experience to the table, and their work reaches into apparel, health and fitness, medical research, and even 3D printing.
Every raleigh agency creative director has a commercial photographer horror story, and it usually starts the same way: “he seemed fine on the phone.”
I’ve been on the other end of that call. Marketing directors reach out after a shoot has already gone sideways more often than before one starts, and by the time I hear from them, the damage is done. The deliverables are late, the usage rights weren’t spelled out, or the photos look like they were shot by someone who’d never worked with a brand guide in their life. So this isn’t going to be a polished pitch about why you should pick us. It’s what I’d tell a marketing director friend before they sign a contract with anyone, us included.
Not every “Raleigh photographer” does commercial work
Here’s the thing nobody says out loud in this industry: photography is not one skill wearing different hats. A photographer who’s great at weddings is often mediocre at product work, and a portrait shooter can absolutely wreck an architectural job. I’ve watched it happen. Different gear, different lighting logic, different sense of what “on brand” even means. If your agency needs consistent product shots across a national ecommerce catalog, hiring someone whose portfolio is mostly engagement photos is a gamble you don’t need to take.
Before you go further, get honest about what the job actually is:
Headshots or executive portraits for leadership pages, press, or investor decks
Product photography for ecommerce, catalogs, or manufacturing clients
Architectural or interior work for real estate or design accounts
Event coverage for conferences, launches, or brand activations
Video and motion for paid social, ads, or product demos
A capable generalist might cover two of these well. Almost nobody covers all five at an agency standard, so ask to see work in the exact category you need, not just the highlight reel.
Local knowledge shows up in ways you won’t notice until it’s missing
Any photographer can shoot a product on white. What separates a real commercial photographer in Raleigh is the stuff that never makes it into a portfolio: knowing which downtown buildings actually have usable natural light by 3pm, which venues will shut you down for using a flash, and how July humidity fogs a lens if you’re not ready for it. It’s knowing the difference between a shoot in Cary and one in the warehouse district, and already having the printer, the venue contact, or the retoucher on speed dial when something goes wrong.
That kind of local fluency is invisible right up until the day it saves your shoot.
What agencies should actually ask before signing
Most vendor questionnaires miss the questions that matter. Here’s what I’d want an agency to press me on:
Can you show me work from a brand our size, in this category, not just your greatest hits? Curated reels hide a lot. Ask for a full, unedited gallery from something comparable.
Who touches the files after the shoot, and where? Plenty of studios shoot locally and send everything overseas for editing with almost no oversight. That’s not automatically a problem, but it’s a problem if nobody tells you.
What’s your real turnaround, not your best case? Ask what happens when a shoot runs long or a client needs a rush.
Can you work from our brand guidelines without babysitting? Color accuracy, layout space for copy, consistency across a multi-market campaign. This is where a lot of otherwise talented photographers fall apart.
What are we actually licensing? Full buyout, limited use, a set term. Get it in writing before the invoice, not after.
If a photographer answers all of that without flinching, you’ve probably found someone worth a call.
The part that doesn’t show up on a spec sheet
You can vet a photographer’s technical skill from a portfolio. What you can’t tell until you’re actually working together is whether they’ll make your job harder or easier.
This is where I think a lot of vendors quietly lose agency accounts, not because the images were bad, but because working with them was a chore. Slow replies. Vague status updates. A shrug when the brief changes mid-project, which it always does. Agencies don’t have room for that. You’ve already got a client to manage. The last thing you need is a photographer who becomes a second one.
I approach every project the way I’d want someone to treat my account if I were the one managing it. I read the brief the way you wrote it, not the way it’s easiest to shoot. If I notice something during a shoot that’s going to matter to your client, an angle nobody asked for, a shot that would work better for a future campaign, a detail on a product that catches light in a way worth showing off, I flag it or just capture it rather than waiting to be told. Half the time, that image ends up being everyone’s favorite.Half the time, that image ends up being everyone’s favorite. Half the time it ends up being the image everyone likes best.
The same goes for communication. You’ll always know where things stand. If something’s going to run long, I tell you early, not the day before delivery. And if a client wants a small change, I handle it without turning it into a change order and a week of delay. Plenty of agencies have told me, after the fact, that the extras I included without being asked turned out more useful than what was originally on the shot list.
What that actually looks like
At New Image Studio, the work is rarely glamorous. It’s manufacturing floors, precision components under macro lenses, architectural interiors, and executive headshots that need to survive a press release without looking stiff. We’ve shot for construction firms, medical device manufacturers, nonprofits, and agencies managing accounts they can’t afford to get wrong. None of that sells itself in a paragraph, so instead of trying, here’s the work.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a commercial photographer in Raleigh cost?
It depends more on scope than on location. A single headshot session runs differently than a multi-day product catalog shoot with focus stacking and heavy retouching. Ask for a quote based on your actual shot list, not a flat “starting at” number, since those rarely hold up once the real brief shows up.
Can you work directly with an agency instead of the end client?
Yes, and honestly it’s most of what I do. I take direction from a creative or account team, loop the actual client in only where it makes sense, and adjust on the fly when feedback comes through a chain instead of straight from the source
Do you offer full usage rights or licensed use only?
Both, depending on what the project needs. Some clients want a full buyout for a national campaign, others only need web use for a year. Get this defined in the contract before the shoot, not after, so nobody’s surprised when the images show up somewhere unexpected.
How fast can you turn around a shoot?
Rush turnarounds are possible, but they cost more and limit how much post-production polish is realistic. If you’ve got a hard deadline, tell me upfront so we can plan the shoot day and the edit around it instead of trying to compress everything after the fact.
Do you shoot product, headshots, architecture, and video, or just one specialty?
All of the above, which is less common than it sounds. Most Raleigh photographers specialize in one lane. I built the studio around handling commercial work across categories, including motion, because agencies rarely want to manage four different vendors for one campaign.
Can you match our brand guidelines across a multi-market campaign?
Yes. Send over the brand book before the shoot and I’ll build the lighting, color, and composition around it rather than adjusting after delivery. It’s much easier to shoot it right the first time than to color-correct a mismatch in post.
What happens if we need revisions after delivery?
Reasonable revisions get handled quickly and without a fight. If a client wants a crop, a color tweak, or a swap between similar frames, that’s part of the process, not an upcharge. Anything beyond that scope gets discussed upfront so there are no surprises on either end.

North Raleigh Ministries
I love a good website imagery upgrade, so when Kara Gravinese, volunteer and services manager at North Raleigh Ministries, reached out about her photography goals, I jumped in right away. We shot each person individually on a white background, then pieced them together into one seamless group photo. Their new site launches soon, and I can’t wait to see it live.

Lacrisha Holcomb’s recent writing; Diagnosis Consciousness is a diverse musing about universal contemporary occurrences, artfully delivered in this therapy-themed collection of poetry and prose. The book embodies the beautifully extensive range of connectedness in experiences and emotions.
MBD, Inc.
MDB, Inc., a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business, hired us to photograph their annual event at the Double Tree Hilton in Durham, NC. At this time, we were able to capture candid shots of their event, individual business portraits of the executives and the team members, and also a group shot of all the 2014 event attendees. About a week later, we went to Durham to take shots of their office space interiors, the building exterior, and photograph team members working in various spaces around their work place.
Dayco
Commercial photography is multifaceted! It gives me a peek into the life of high-tech industrial work places. We captured everything from the Dayco team hard at work, to the line of high-tech machinery. We were also able to takeproduct photography of some of the perfect pieces that these men and machines created.

Advanced Lighting Techniques
My value of advanced lighting techniques conveys a visually dynamic message to the viewers. The accuracy and clarity of the subject is what makes for a breathtaking photograph. Whether you are seeking commercial photography, architecture photography, portrait & headshot photography I’m aware of every detail that becomes part of the final composition. One of the most important aspects of photography that should be given special attention is lighting. The word photography is from the Greek word “phos” which means light and “graphis” which means drawing. Controlling the amount of light, the duration of the light and its intensity are the factors in creating a good photo.
The camera, which serves as the eye in photography, can give different effects on the photos because of the light it sees through its lens. Lighting is considered to be the best friend and worst enemy of photographers. The lighting in photos will also depend on what you are taking pictures of.
Planning, understanding and knowledge of some photography lighting tips will be essential in creating a good photo. Also, being aware of the time of day is a key element in outdoor photography. Shadows will be created if you don’t know how to modify your shots when there is sunlight. There is no way that the brightness of the sun can be adjusted, so the adjustments must be made from the camera. Sunlight is very effective in photography lighting, however a photographer should know how to modify the shots. Correct angle are another factor when you are working with natural light.
This kind of light is coming from the sun without any other source needed to get light on the subject. When the sun is low (otherwise known as “magic hours”) during the early morning and also at dusk, the time light creates amazing colors on the subject. This allows for a warm glow over the subject. Professional photographers avoid taking photos during heavy midday sunlight because it is not ideal for photography. Photography on a cloudy day can make for dynamic images.
Observe and study the path of the light and how it will help enhance the photo. For portraits, harsh lights should not be used. In taking pictures of other people, use soft lighting. Photography lighting should be given attention and photographers focus on this aspect seriously because lighting can cause overexposure. Using flash lights in your photos will depend on how dark it is and where you are taking pictures. Balancing the light available and the light coming from the flash will do the trick here. Good photos should actually come up with images with impressions that you are using a natural light and not an artificial one. All this will depend on how good and clever the photographer is.
Photography lighting will be one of the key elements in getting a breathtaking and a good photo. Combining this with HDR photography can produce some amazing work! Keen observation and knowing photography lighting techniques is the best tool that the photographer will have. If you want to have a world class photo captured, be aware of the light that surrounds you.

Since then, her bookings have taken off, and she credits the photos for making the difference

North Carolina Asian Americans Together hosted Party In The Park to celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month and held space for a vigil for the lives taken in Buffalo. The spearheaded of this event was led by the head of community engagement, Phian Tran. Party in the Park was held at Moore’s Square in Raleigh, North Carolina on May 20th and included an incredible lineup of performers, artist, vendors and community groups. A memorial altar in memory of victims of white supremacist violence was created for this event and a vigil was held for the lives taken in Buffalo. FaithAction’s diverse and bilingual staff bring tremendous education and experience to the work of serving and accompanying our newest immigrants, as well as multicultural and interfaith education and bridge-building programs. GET INVOLVED
As I walked through this event I could feel the passion of the mission that each performer, artist, vendor, and community groups brought to this space, and how they use their gifts to teach and serve the community wherever they go. Each individual or group that I spoke with, musicians and poets I listened to, photos I captured, interactions I was a part of and ones that I simply observed all touched my heart to varying degrees. I feel very fortunate that I was able to attend this unique event and learn about these great local organizations that we have right here in Raleigh and the surrounding areas. Thank you NCAAT for hosting such a beautiful event!
I had the honor and pleasure of collaborating with the kind and brilliant alternative knitter, Eris Swanstrom, creator of Modique Couture handmade alternative knitwear. Eris began knitting in 1990 (at age 14) and is self taught on all of the knitting machines she has ever used. She honed her craft for many years before creating the Modique Couture line in 2017. Woot! Eris currently works on a range of 5 machines that vary in age (1958-1988). All of her garments are far from traditional and her preference to pattern manually makes each luscious piece one-of-a-kind. In addition to making the clothing, get this…Eris also makes the fabric that the clothing is made from! The flavor palette of Modique Couture materials include organic, hand dyed, sustainable fibers sourced locally and in select locations around the world, lyocell, cotton, silk, alpaca, wools, angora, bamboo, and linen. Now, let’s talk about the details. All of Modique Couture’s buttons, fasteners, and embellishments are made by local artists, such as Woodcrafty, Rivet Jewelry, and Xena Electra. Definitely check out their art (after finishing this post)! The complex and intricate expressions of Modique Couture knitwear are passionate, emotional, and as Eris puts it, “untamed.” So true! The unpredictability of her patterns, color selections, and hemlines attribute to the magic of her designs. There is a profound bond of intimacy between Eris and the fabric that gives rise to an indescribable bond between the body and the garb.
I am 41 years of age and I have always had a deep appreciation for fashion and the expressions from which fashion ignites. Because of Modique Couture, I now understand what it means to experience a deep love and connection with a garment. The energy of the matter that is used to create her pieces feels ancient…ancestral. Each time I slide on a Modique Couture garment, I feel grounded more, more connected to the earth, and empowered. Modique Couture speaks to the heart, and the heart can’t help but listen. So, embrace it, love it, wear it, share it, cherish it!
This photo shoot captured a mere sliver of her incredible art! BIG HUGS and THANK YOUS to all of the wonderful models that helped make this collab possible! And a HUGE THANK YOU to Eris for sharing her gifts with the world!!! To discover more about Eris and view her art work visit Modique Couture and Instagram. You can also find Modique Couture at @cocoongallerync
It is fascinating how much we can learn about the world, ourselves, and others through the creative process of photography. Looking at the world through a lens provides a curious perspective and photography is the creative outlet that allows us to capture and express our unique views.
The ability to teach others how to use a camera to create and express themselves is my passion! I like to think of the world as a canvas and a camera a paintbrush with buttons and dials. Let me show you how to paint the world in the way that you see it!

Portrait Photographer Raleigh – Art Park at the North Carolina Museum of Art
On special occasions, I will take on unique portrait photography projects for a client who wants me to capture something extra special. This particular request was for a portrait shoot with Sima and Ravin on the Art Park grounds at the North Carolina Museum of Art. I loved watching the two beam with happiness as they cuddled and admired one another. As I captured Sima and Ravin walking through the grass and into the sunset, I felt like I was immersed in a fairy tale come to life.
