Greetings!
I go by the name, Amy Edwards and I am thrilled to be teaching private photography lessons and photography classes for my fellow photography enthusiasts of the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill areas! I have been teaching private photography lessons (with my favorite grasshoppa, “MisterG”) for a number of weeks now. MisterG is a passionate person and dedicated pupil who came to me with specific photography goals. Seeking out unique locations to photograph and creating custom exercises are essential aspects of the creative learning process for each student. Some of the exercises I have created thus far are tailored to learning and understanding the fundamentals of: the DSLR camera and it’s settings, the power of ambient light (and how to use it), depth of field, and creating beautiful compositions. There is so much growth and progress during each lesson I have with MisterG. I can’t think of a better feeling that an instructor can have, when they are able to experience/observe this with one of their pupils! Smartphone Camera Class Overview:
Have you ever wanted to know how to take pictures using your Smartphone and then take your camera phone images and do things like boost the contrast, desaturate, convert to black&white, add textures, etc.? If so, this is the photography class for you!

The first part of this class will:

Event Photography Raleigh

…is one of New Image Studio photographers niches. We were honored when The White House hired us to photograph Michelle Obama at an event, held at the Raleigh Marriott City Center. We are very familiar with Event Photography and have also photographed an array of high profile political figures. To name a few: the last seven governors, secretary of state, insurance commissioner, lottery commissioner, and most recently Renee Ellmers. Our Event Photographers are accustomed to event photography and political figure photography, which is why The White House felt confident about hiring us for an event of this calibre. We had the recent opportunity to do On-Location Commercial Photography with the MCNeil Law Firm in Raleigh, NC. John McNeil contacted us for the purpose of having dynamite images of  his company for their website. The power of having high-quality images on a company website, is a value that New Image Studio photographers and John McNeil embrace. We photographed the McNeil Law Firm on-location, at their office. On-location photography gives your company website a very personalized feel. When a client visits your company website and they are able to see you and your team in your element, it allows them a certain sense of comfort. It also gives your client/potential client, even that much more of a sense of what they can expect when they work with you. Pictures can indeed speak thousands of words! We had a great time working with John and his team. Here are some of the images that we captured at this shoot….

Product Photography

High-end still product photography in the commercial world is essential for the consumer market. This is why Product Marketing Manager, Robert Nelson, of ESP Energy Intelligence made contact with us last week. Robert’s product photography subjects were SurgeX surge protectors. Capturing the best angles of each surge protector, allowed us to showcase the intricate components of each device.

New Image Studio photographers shot behind the scenes photography for the music video, “Touch the Sky” written and performed by the Windsor Oaks Band. The music video was created by Raleigh’s cutting-edge video production crew, Focus Media. We photographed the band and the video crew for three days; capturing everything from the actors auditioning at the casting call to the last day of filming, which ended up with a grand finale rock-out session in the middle of a beautiful sun-streaked forest. The Windsor Oaks Band album release party will be at the Pour House in Raleigh on March 1st 2013 (see flyer below for details). Check out their music video, and some of the amazing photos that evolved from his three day photography extravaganza….

New Image Studio Band Photographers Raleigh…Photographers shoot behind the scenes photography for music video “Touch the Sky”…written and performed by the Windsor Oaks Band

Aspiring model, Keyana Bourne contacted New Image Studio Model Photographers with the goal to update and enhance her model portfolio photography. We set up a consultation with Keyana at our Raleigh Studio to meet in person. This allowed us to get to know one another a bit and better assess her style and photography goals. Modeling industry standards like to see at least 3 different looks: headshot, three-quarter, and full-body. We shared our styling ideas and locations to photograph her in Downtown Raleigh and she loved them all! We photographed Keyana on a day that gave us perfect weather. This was essential for her shoot to evoke the feel and create bright and edgy looks that we were going for. Here are some of the photographs that came from her photo shoot….

When The New Image Studio Architecture Photographers were approached by Elton Williams, “Day Maker” and owner of the Paul Mitchell School in Raleigh, the words luxury and edgy came to mind. To capture images of the school that were as cutting edge (no pun intended) as the Paul Mitchell brand, we shot from extreme angles. This allowed us to showcase the length and height of the school’s exterior, while still showing off  it’s playful and sleek interior. By utilizing our high-end lighting, the already present features of the Elton’s school, were enhanced that much more.

DSLR ABC’s Workshop Study Guide:

F-Stop Aperture
The number used to describe aperture size. A smaller number is a larger opening. The smaller number results in less light needed to expose the image and less depth of field (less in focus), the smaller number will also result in less depth of field. The widest F-stop your lens opens up to will determine how much you will be able to shoot in low light situations without a flash. So if your lens opens up to F 2 or F2.8 or F4 or F5.6, that will tell you how your lens is. A larger number results in more light needed to expose the image and more depth of field (more in focus). When determining exposure, it is important to realize each full F-Stop equals one full shutter speed setting. Each of the following are full F-Stops: F2.8, F4, F5.6, F8, F11, F16, F22
Shutter Speed Basics
Shutter speed controls the amount of time that your digital sensor is exposed to light. The shutter is a small plastic sheet that opens and closes to allow light onto the digital sensor or film plane. The shutter is opened when you press the shutter release button on your camera to take a picture. The shutter speed determines how long the shutter remains open. There are medium format cameras that have the shutter in the lens instead of the camera body, but here I am referring only to DSLR cameras. Cameras will have a variety of shutter speeds often listed- but the following are full shutter speeds that would relate to full F-Stops when determining a proper exposure: 1/500, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1 second, 2 second and then as you double your exposure it equals another full F- stop. Unless you are trying to do some kind of creative motion blur it is best not to hand hold your camera below 1/60 of a second for 50mm or wider lenses, 1/125 for 135mm lens and 1/250 of a second for a 200mm lens. If you have a zoom lens then go with the longest focal length of the zoom. So, if you have a 70-200. then don’t go below 1/250, unless you are using a tripod or a monopod.
ISO
This is the light sensitivity of a digital sensor. The larger the number, the less light that is needed to capture the image. This sensitivity is measured by a formula developed by the International Standard Organization and is abbreviated as ISO. Once you understand shutter speed, F-Stops and ISO, it is time to pull them together to create a properly exposed image. Sometimes the photographer wants to underexpose an image or overexpose it, so everything is a guide which you can then tweak it to create the mood of your image. Proper exposure depends on the intentions of the photographer. Proper exposure is determined with the ISO, shutter speed, and aperture.

You have to determine which of these you need to set first. If you are doing a single portrait and you want the background to blur out of focus by choosing a wide F-Stop then that is fixed decision. if you are shooting with a 50mm lens and you know you can’t hand hold your camera lower than 1/60 shutter speed and you are inside, using window light, at the least ISO so you may have to use a high ISO to get the shot you want. If you are outside with the same situation you will go with a low ISO. Try to use the lowest ISO you can get away with. If there just is not enough light or the light is too flat and dull you may want to use a flash, strobe or tungsten light to create the mood you want.
